Viviana Arzate

Viviana Arzate
Viviana received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, minoring in sociology, from Northeastern Illinois University. During her time in college, she worked multiple different jobs in the food industry until beginning her work as a registered behavior technician (RBT) providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to children living with autism, along with other psychological, physical, occupational, feeding, and speech skills. After graduating, Viviana worked as a home visitor providing parent education on child development, preparing expecting families and those with children from 0-3 years old with activities to build skills to improve school readiness and have a successful school year. Viviana currently volunteers for JUNTOZ NFP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing people together, spreading information on substance use, and connecting people to mental and physical health resources, focusing on the Hispanic/Latino community. With JUNTOZ NFP, she helps with promotions, social media, and event assistance. Viviana’s career and personal goals are to help underfunded, overlooked communities, especially those who identify with the BIPOC community, connect with resources while guiding them to aspire and achieve more. Viviana would love to be an inspiration to people to show that while you cannot change where you came from, you definitely hold the power to create a better future for yourself.

Melissa “Meli” Cardenas is a proud, bilingual Client Services Supervisor and has been with Nicasa Behavioral Health Services for over a year. Meli has over seven years of supervisory experience and is dedicated to providing outstanding customer service while connecting with the community. She is passionate about helping staff better meet the needs of the individuals we treat and uplifting the community as she continues to learn and grow to ensure smooth operations. In her free time, Meli enjoys working on her car.

Marissa Everitt, BSW
Marissa Everitt is a Prevention Coordinator at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. She completed her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at Northeastern Illinois University. In her current role, she ensures that all prevention staff are implementing prevention programming, are appropriately trained, and are adequately supported in their respective schools and classrooms. Her department works with middle schools in Waukegan, Mundelein, and Wauconda to provide social-emotional skills and youth substance use prevention education. She has worked with youth between the ages of 3-17 years old for over ten years. In the near future, Marissa would like to start working towards earning a master’s degree in social work, followed by earning her clinical social work license (LCSW).

Dr. Emperatriz Guerra, CAADC, CCFC
Dr. Guerra-Hand holds a Doctorate Degree in Ministry with an emphasis on counseling. She has over 30 years of behavioral health experience and has been with Nicasa Behavioral Health Services since 1996. Dr. Guerra-Hand is an Internationally Certified Advanced Addiction and Drug Counselor (CAADC) in good standing with the Illinois Certification Board and a Clinically Certified Forensic Counselor (CCFC). She is a member of the College of Lake County’s Human Service Advisory Committee and the Therapeutic and Intensive Monitoring (TIM) Drug Court. Dr. Guerra-Hand received the Hector Rodriguez Customer Service Award for outstanding services to the community in 1996, a Drug Court Award from the Illinois 19th Judicial Circuit Court for support and contributions to the program, and the Keith Keesy State Award (from the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association) and Hispanic Heritage Award (from Waukegan Township) in 2012.

Sindy Guerra is a bilingual Colombian native who was raised in the Lake County area. She completed her Bachelor of Arts at Northeastern Illinois University, majoring in Psychology. Sindy has worked in the field of social services for over 13 years in different capacities including, but not limited to, billing and coding coordinator, Parenting and Anger Management Facilitator, Family Advocacy Counselor, Mental Health Case Manager for adults with severe mental health diagnoses, and Family Advocacy Coordinator. In her current role, she oversees family education and support to assist in stabilizing and strengthening families to avoid any potential abuse and neglect. She has a passion for working with diverse communities as well as building community partnerships and relationships to better serve individuals and families in need.

Heather Harwell, MA, QMHP, NCC
Heather Harwell holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, a Bachelor’s in Psychology, and an Associate in Arts/ Communications. Heather is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Metaphysical Science. Heather completed a one-year internship with Nicasa Behavioral Health Services before becoming an employee for three years. Heather is certified in hypnotherapy, color therapy, as a mindfulness teacher, corporate and kids yoga instructor, and life coach. She is a Therapeutic and Intensive Monitoring (TIM) Drug Court member. Heather enjoys serving the Lake County population and providing community outreach.

Karen Hines
Karen Hines has over 30 years of experience in accounting, finance, and administration. She has been with Nicasa Behavioral Health Services since 1999 in several different roles and is currently the Director of Administration. Karen oversees finance and human resources and serves as the organization’s Privacy Officer. Some of her responsibilities include the preparation of computerized financial statements, account analysis, debt summaries, audit and management letter responses, budgets, tax returns, statistical reports, and management of facilities.
Bruce N. Johnson

Bruce N. Johnson
Bruce N. Johnson is the Chief Executive Officer of Nicasa Behavioral Health Services and has led the organization for 19 years. He is a nationally recognized substance abuse prevention and treatment leader and a retired Chief of Police. He is the past chair of the Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Prevention Task Force, Co-Founder of the Lake County Opioid Initiative, and the founder of the very successful Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, where he also served as Board President. Mr. Johnson is an adjunct faculty professor, consultant, trainer, and subject matter expert for several institutions and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after more than 28 years of service in the United States Marine Corps.

Jennifer Larson is a Clinical Supervisor at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services and has years of experience in substance abuse. She received her Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago with an emphasis in mental health. After graduate school, Jennifer obtained her Social Work (LSW) licensure and became a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC). Throughout her career, she has worked with a wide range of clientele, from young children to adults. She is passionate about the field of social work and strives to help clients find their voice.

Sharon Peddicord, LCSW
Sharon graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. She attended graduate school at the Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC and completed her Master’s in Social Work. Sharon attained her clinical license after completing supervision and an internship as a therapist. She has over 30 years of experience in the mental health field and has worked with the Drug and Mental Health Courts for the past 16 years. Sharon has a long history of working with many community agencies and has previously served on the Bridge House Board of Directors. She has devoted her career to helping those in need and making a difference in their lives.

Cicily Perez is a counselor at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. She recently accepted the roles of Court Liaison and Illinois Health Practice Alliance (IHPA) Coordinator. She started off at Nicasa as an intern in July 2021 and was hired on as a counselor in 2022. She has worked at Nicasa for over two years, and it will be three years In April 2025. Cicily is proud to work at Nicasa and for the help that is provided to the vast amounts of clients who walk through Nicasa’s doors and attend group services. Cicily is a single mother who lives in Wisconsin.

Rebecca Price, LSW, CADC
Rebecca Price is the Director of Prevention for Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, which oversees in-school prevention programming, Teen Court youth diversion, community coalitions, and deflection programs. She received her Master’s in Social Work from George Williams University in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. After graduate school, she obtained her licensure in Social Work (LSW) and certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), and she is currently working towards earning her clinical social work license (LCSW). Before Nicasa, she worked in child welfare in facility care for seven years. Rebecca is committed to the field of social work because she believes that even though everyone has a different path in life, they still deserve to be the best version of themselves, and she hopes to help along the way.

Heather Shaver, MA, LCPC
Heather Shaver serves as a Clinical Supervisor at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois, she holds a Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Since joining Nicasa in 2021, Heather has specialized in working with clients experiencing primary challenges in both substance use and problem gambling and secondary mental health disorders. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is currently pursuing certification as a Problem and Compulsive Gambling Counselor (PCGC). Heather remains dedicated to working closely with clients, bringing a person-first approach to her work. She passionately supports each client in achieving their goals, combining empathy, warmth, and humor to foster a positive and engaging environment.

Linda Snelten
Linda Snelten is the Chief Operating Officer at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. She has over 33 years of experience in healthcare and nonprofit management and has been with Nicasa for over 25 years. She is responsible for overseeing day-to-day services, processes, systems, operations, and finances throughout the organization. During her tenure with Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, Linda has helped to oversee many accomplishments, including the expansion to additional sites (Highland Park, Mundelein, and Zion), the expansion of Women’s Services (for homeless and working women, as well as those at risk of HIV/AIDS), organization of training and certification for 11 staff to become Certified Allied Addiction Practitioners (CAAP), growth of intensive outpatient services to treat youth 12 years and older, development of anger management programming for middle and high school students, implementing a new electronic health record system, and providing financial oversight for more than 20 federal grant projects. Linda firmly believes in putting clients first and guiding her work in doing what is best for all of Nicasa’s clients.

Vicky Tello, MJ, NMPSC, LSW
Vicky Tello is the Director of Philanthropy at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. She is responsible for the fundraising and marketing activities of the organization, including nurturing and cultivating relationships with current and prospective donors, volunteers, sponsors, foundations, and corporations, writing grant proposals and managing reports, increasing the overall donor base for the organization, increasing visibility of the organization, and managing overall development efforts. She is a bilingual, licensed social worker focused on emotional intelligence and the people’s side of leadership. Previously, she was working in quality improvement, which allowed her to understand all facets of the inner-workings of an organization. One of the most important moving parts within an organization is the people engaged in the work. Without their understanding and commitment to the field and quality of services, fundraising, and philanthropy practices become impossible. In addition to her experience in quality improvement, she has experience overseeing various working parts, including compliance, program evaluation, and process outcomes, grant writing and management, data tracking and analysis, accreditation, customer service, training, communication, strategic planning, risk management, behavioral health Medicaid, and nonprofit management in general. Vicky’s overall career goal is to work in social services that support immigrants in any capacity, as she believes that all individuals have a right to be treated as human beings regardless of their differences.
Elizabeth Thielen, LPC, PCGC
Senior Director of Substance Abuse Treatment Services
Elizabeth Thielen, LPC, PCGC
Elizabeth Thielen is a Senior Director at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services in Lake County, Illinois, and has over 20 years of experience in the addictions field. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, she is one of only about 70 certified gambling counselors in Illinois. Elizabeth is passionate about increasing awareness of gambling disorders in the community and among helping professionals. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling, holding the position of President for one term. She has also been an adjunct faculty member at the College of Lake County, teaching about process/behavioral addictions. Elizabeth co-chairs the Gambling Disorder Committee, which makes recommendations to the Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery. Having spoken at the local, state, and national levels, Elizabeth is recognized as an engaging speaker on gambling disorder and prevention. A former amateur athlete, Elizabeth is also committed to helping athletes avoid disordered gambling as our state adjusts to recently legalized sports betting.

Deflection Coordinator
Andrea Usry
Andrea is the Deflection Coordinator at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services. The Deflection Program oversees two granted programs. The first is the Community-Law Enforcement and Other First Responder Partnership for Deflection and Substance Use Disorder by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA), with sponsorship from the Mundelein Police Department. This program focuses on connecting with people who survive an overdose after receiving Narcan assistance from a first responder. The Deflection staff connects with the people to provide them with treatment options and places to find help. The second granted program, Block-by-Block, is funded by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and provides bilingual information and instructions, along with Narcan and substance test kits, to educate the Lake County community at large on harm reduction practices, how to find help, and how to save a life when experiencing an overdose. Prior to Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, Andrea was the Safe Youth Program Director at A Safe Place. In 2019, Andrea retired with the rank of Lieutenant from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, where she spent most of her career in investigations, with specialties in Crimes Against Children and Emergency Preparedness (NIMS). Currently, Andrea lives in Lake County and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, reading, and gardening.

Kimberly Watts, LCSW, CADC
Kimberly Watts is the Director of Mental Health and Peer Services at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, with over 12 years of working in victim advocacy, mental health, and substance abuse. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC), and awaiting certification as a Problem and Compulsive Gambling Counselor (PCGC). Kimberly is passionate about increasing awareness of clients’ needs to ensure their successful, life-long recovery and personal growth. Supporting Lake County, Kimberly was instrumental in starting the first Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program in the county and developing relationships with Lake County probation for continuity of care. In furthering advocacy for others, she teaches Opioid Use Disorder as part of the University of Chicago Medicine Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) program. Kimberly, her four children, and her husband returned to the county after completing his naval career and settling in northern Lake County after living around the United States.
