| May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While many in our communities are aware of what mental health is, we often struggle with ways to support our own mental health as well as how to support those around us who are facing challenges.
This May we are encouraging everyone to turn their awareness into action by promoting good mental health habits and finding new ways to support the mental health of our communities. Mental health is not something that can wait to be worked on. For many, the waiting and silence causes unnecessary pain that is often managed through maladaptive coping strategies like substance use, gambling, deflecting problems, and more. Here are some tips to help empower yourself and those around you:
Connect with nature and exercise
Regular exercise is important to promoting a healthy body and mind. Engaging with nature, like going for a hike to spending time with animals can also produce positive connections in our mind which can help reduce some symptoms of mental health challenges.
Maintain proper nutrition and stay hydrated
When we feel emotionally dysregulated, we might experience a decrease in appetite or avoid drinking fluids until things feel “calm” again. A continued pattern of this behavior, however, can cause these intense feelings to become worse. Some people even seek comfort in certain foods because they are associated with positive feelings and memories in their minds. It is important to stay hydrated and practice proper nutrition when available to keep you fueled.
Rest is essential to your wellbeing
In today’s world, there is so much happening all at once. There is always something new going on that feels like it demands your full attention. Most of the time, it actually doesn’t. Take time to rest your mind and disengage from the things that cause you the most stress.
Promote a positive work-life balance
Many of us, without realizing it, are setting the tone and culture of our work spaces. Your team, peers, and more are often looking towards others to set a benchmark for expectations in their careers and other activities. If they see you staying late often, working while sick, and not taking vacation–they might see that as a sign they need to follow that same schedule to advance or even stay. Reflect on the tempo that you have been working and see if there are obligations and personal needs that are going unmet in your life. Discuss ways to help promote a healthier work-life balance and encourage those around you to do the same.
Create goals and set priorities
When we get stuck in “all-or-nothing” thinking, sometimes we forget to look forward to the future in a positive way. We often become trapped in bleak expectations where change is impossible to engage in. Set goals that are manageable and achievable–and don’t forget to celebrate these accomplishments. Create a list of your priorities and honor those commitments. Often these goals and priorities can help move you away from these concerns and see new possibilities.
Advocate for change
We recognize that there are things within and outside of our control. However, we can still let our voices be heard to effect change. Speak out about the needs of our communities and get in contact with those who stand to make a difference at the local, state, and federal level. Advocate for increased spending on Medicaid and behavioral health services, and keep promoting stigma-free services and spaces within your community.
